Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer is a broad term that includes basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and melanomas. Together, the skin cancers are the most common cancers in the United States. They are commonly associated with excessive exposure to ultra-violet light (i.e., sun exposure).

Skin Cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. It doesn’t discriminate between genders. Men and women with fair complexions as well as people of color can be affected. It appears most frequently on sun exposed parts of the body, i.e., the face, neck, scalp, hands, shoulders, arms and back. The ear and lower lip are also especially vulnerable.

More than one hundred thousand (100,000) cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year. You should take measures to prevent exposure and also watch for those warning signs. Keep an eye on dry or scaly patches or atypical moles. (deviating from the normal; not conforming to type)

Diagnosis of skin lesions usually requires a biopsy. This involves removing a piece of the affected tissue, with examination under a microscope. If a tumor is present, definitive treatment is necessary and can include excisional surgery under a local anesthesia or cryosurgery.
